All-Star: Jaylee

Jaylee lived a life of normalcy, as any young girl should. She was always out spending time with her family of four, including her little brother, Brooklyn.

Gymnastics is a love of hers.

“She was always flipping around the house and showing off how flexible she was,” Jaylee’s mother, Julie, reminisced. Enjoying her summer break, she was anticipating the transition into fourth grade.

Since Jaylee was usually so nimble and athletic, her parents were concerned when she started having joint pain. The doctors couldn’t seem to find the source. They did, although, notice her white blood count was decreasing with each blood test done. Taking this into account, Jaylee was admitted to the hospital for close monitoring. Even then, her family was told there was nothing to worry about.

It was shocking news when Jaylee was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes a large number of abnormal blood cells.

Julie was crushed; “I was numb for a good minute and then it finally hit me that this was really happening. I just cried.”

Jaylee's treatments were 30 days inpatient, and one week off in between. Her dad continued to work, but Julie went on long term-leave from her full-time job to be Jaylee's primary caregiver and decision-maker during the long hospital stays. While it tremendously affected their family, Julie says they appreciate life much more. “I feel so blessed that Jaylee was able to kick cancer’s butt!”

To help ease the emotional and financial burdens of pediatric cancer, the Pinky Swear Foundation paid for one month's mortgage, an All-Star Weekend, Superhero Day with Love Your Melon and more.

Jaylee and her family are thankful for the support from friends, family, and Pinky Swear.

“Words can't even explain how much we appreciate what you have done for our family and the opportunities you've given us,” Jaylee’s mother said. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
