All-Star: Breslyn

With Mom working two jobs, Dad stationed in another city for the military, and two sisters at home, four-year-old Breslyn's life was very active.

But suddenly, she was getting frequent fevers, coughs, fatigue, and bruises. Shockingly, Breslyn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in April 2016.

"I was four hours away when I received the phone call from the doctor about Breslyn. It was the longest drive of my life. I thought it had to be a mistake. Not my little girl," said her mom, Laura.

Life slowed down after Breslyn's diagnosis. The family’s active nights going to sporting events turned into nights snuggling on the couch, giving medication, and lots of tears. Breslyn's older sisters struggled to understand the situation; why their sister would get what she wanted, why she cried, and why they have to give in to their sister so much.

Laura and Breslyn’s dad, Don, also had to make changes so they could focus on what was most important; helping their daughter. Laura took off work for a while, then went to part time. Don has served the National Guard for over 25 years, and was based in Iowa City, four hours away from the family. After his daughter's diagnosis he took time off to help his family at home in West Des Moines. Unfortunately, the family was still paying two mortgages on only one salary.

"Pinky Swear gave us some breathing room, especially when we were focusing on our daughter's health and paying two mortgages," says Laura. “This situation has made me realize not to take anything for granted, and love everyday.”

Breslyn now has chemo only once a month, and will finish treatment in November 2018. Even though she still takes multiple medications daily and undergoes spinal taps every three months, she is a happy, playful little four-year-old girl. Her mom happily reports, "Her hair is growing back and she is starting to twirl it. She dresses herself every morning and I am always excited to see her outfit of the day."
