All-Star: Abby

Before cancer, Abby was a flag football player, an avid baseball fan, and had been in fencing, Kung-Fu, and anything else she wanted to try. Then Abby was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in October 2012, when she was just eight years old.

She immediately moved into Children's Hospital in Minneapolis to begin treatments, living in the hospital until she was done with treatment in March 2013. After eight months of remission, Abby relapsed in September 2013. They moved back into Children's, and then to the Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, for a bone marrow transplant. Abby was released from the hospital in April of 2014.

Although 11-year-old Abby continues to have after effects of her treatment and transplant, she remains in remission, with regular follow ups with both the Mayo Clinic and at the University of Minnesota Children's Masonic Hospital. She is now attending 5th grade, and enjoys being around other kids after missing out on three years of school. Her favorite hobbies still include playing sports, but not competitively. She now loves swimming, playing Minecraft, being a big sister to Jill, hanging out with her dogs, drawing and coloring, cooking and many more interests. And while Abby may be shy, she keeps those around her laughing with her hilarious sense of humor.

Pinky Swear helped Abby's family during their cancer journey more than once. Because of Pinky Swear, they didn't need to worry about their mortgage being paid one month when everything but cancer was at the back of our minds.

As it does to any family who goes through such an awful experience, cancer has made it's mark on Abby's family. They report having come out of the experience as a stronger family, and instead of sweating the small things they appreciate the time they have together now more than ever.
